Confiscado em 1768, pelo então governo do Grão Pará, para abrigar um hospital militar, a imponente edificação teve seus espaços reformulados pelo arquiteto italiano Antônio José Landi.
Transformado em espaço cultural em 2002, localizado às margens a baía do guajará, o encantamento da vista do local, tornam esse patrimônio um dos cartões postais mais belos da capital paraense.
